Red Sox Trade Deadline Moves Could Hit Massachusetts Betting Market Hard

The Boston Red Sox sit at 22-30, last in the AL East and 12.5 games back of first place, and the August 3 trade deadline is fast approaching. If chief baseball officer Craig Breslow opts to sell, the ripple effects won't just be felt on the field, Massachusetts bettors could feel it too.

Closer Aroldis Chapman is the headliner. The 38-year-old has posted a 1.00 ERA and 0.753 WHIP across 87 appearances since joining Boston before the 2025 season, and has already been reported as expected to be traded to a contender. He has been dealt twice mid-season previously, winning the World Series both times, and remains the most coveted reliever on the market.

Right behind him is starter Sonny Gray. The 36-year-old owns an 8-1 record and 3.12 ERA across 13 starts and has signaled he is open to waiving his no-trade clause. His $30 million mutual option for 2027 will almost certainly not be picked up, making him a straightforward deadline candidate.

Other Players The Red Sox Could Ship

Beyond the top two, Willson Contreras leads the club in home runs (11), RBI (33) and OPS (.898), making him the most intriguing bat available if Boston commits to a full sell-off. Jarren Duran and Brayan Bello round out the list, both under team control, though moving either would signal a full rebuild rather than a simple deadline sale.

For Massachusetts betting apps, the timing is brutal. The state recorded $632 million in handle in May with no NBA or NHL playoffs to lean on. Selling Chapman and Gray strips the Red Sox of their two best performers heading into August, the deadest month on the sports calendar before the NFL kicks off in September. Sportsbooks would almost certainly lengthen Boston's already long playoff odds, cooling what little local betting interest remains.
