Where Massachusetts Ranks Among States in Flight Prices

Fact Checked by Pat McLoone

Today is National Cheap Flight Day.

So, BetMassachusetts.com – where we usually provide the latest Massachusetts sportsbook promos – veered from normal coverage to see which states have the least/most expensive flight prices.

While it always is sad to see summer come to an end, one silver lining is that the end of August marks a notable reduction in the cost of airline tickets. With kids back to school, and vacations days spent, airfare costs can drop up to 20% between late-August and Thanksgiving.

The specific date of Aug. 23 is mostly a marketing device, but this is still a great time for budget-conscious travelers to start digging around for deals.

But how expensive is it to fly to Massachusetts compared to the other U.S. states?

Using data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, we ranked the states and the District of Columbia based on approximate average domestic airline itinerary fares by origin city for 2022 and the first quarter of 2023. The Bureau of Transportation’s airfares are reported based on individual cities, and obviously the cities within a given state are of varying sizes. We averaged the fares by city, then arranged them by state, to arrive at our numbers.

Delaware Takes Crown for Cheapest Flights

It turns out the cheapest flights in America are into Delaware. However, it’s worth noting that the only commercial airport in the USA‘s second-smallest state mainly services flights to nearby East Coast destinations, suppressing airfares.

Meanwhile, far-flung Alaska has by far the most expensive price tag for a plane ticket on average.

As for Massachusetts, the Bay State rates out as the 21st cheapest state to travel to through the air. Round trip and one-way domestic flights average $446. But despite being in the cheaper half of our ranks, traveling to Massachusetts is pricier than the national average, which, according to Forbes, puts a one-way domestic flight at $378 and $427 for a round-trip ticket.

The vast majority of visitors arrive through the Boston Logan Airport, which last year welcomed more than 36 million travelers.
